This painting is of Decorated White Indian Elephant. The elephant symbolizes power and prosperity, clouds and gracefulness.
The Indian Elephant goes back to the mythologies. As the Gods ( ‘Deva’) and the demons ( ‘Asura’) churned the oceans during ‘sagar manthan’ ( sagar = sea ; manthan = churning ) for the elixir of life - ‘amrit’ ( nectar ) that would make them immortal , there surfaced the ‘navratnas’ ( nine jewels ). One of these jewels was the elephant. The elephant is, therefore, considered absolutely precious to be preserved and protected like the way jewels are.
The white elephant is considered to belong to the god Indra. The name of the elephant is Airavata and it is a flying elephant. Airavata is made the King of all elephants by Lord Indra.
In another mythological story, Buddha's mother has dreamt of a white elephant in one of her dreams. And then the prophet of peace Gautam Buddha was born.
The white elephant is dust colored. The color is somewhat ashy, and the elephant has pink eyes and white toe-nails.
The Royal White Elephants were not taken to war, and not ridden in procession, they were kept within the confines of the palace, entrusted to the care of senior officials, fed well, washed regularly, and worried over constantly.
For the kings of Burma and Siam the possession of these sacred beasts became very important. A king who had many fine white elephants would be successful. His kingdom would prosper and his reign would be long. If his white elephants died, it foretold disaster for the king and the kingdom.
